Since time immemorial, massage therapy has been used to relieve pain and to heal in every known culture in the world. Throughout the ages, therapeutic massage has been developed and perfected to the point of becoming an art form. Today, modern massage therapists employ a variety of styles as well as newly developed techniques to achieve remarkable results for their clients.
Therapeutic massage is generally arranged into three approaches:
mechanical-by applying of gentle force to soft tissues, reflexive-that exerts
therapeutic effect on somatic and autonomic nervous systems, and movement
approach, which attempts to change abnormal movement patterns and establish
more harmonious ones.
The numerous benefits of massage include: improved circulation, elimination, nervous system control, improved muscle-skeletal system function, stress release, relaxation, helping body’s natural process of rehabilitation, restoration and normalization of anatomic and physiologic function and ability.
